Every year, the first real snowfall in Edmonton brings the same thing: a line of people who all want winter tires on the same day. Here is how to time it so you are not one of them.
The 7 degree rule
Tire makers in Canada use a simple guide: switch to winter tires when daily temperatures stay consistently below 7°C, and switch back when they stay above it.
Why 7°C? Below that, the rubber in all-season and summer tires starts to stiffen and lose grip, even on dry pavement. Winter tires use a softer compound designed to stay flexible in the cold, plus deep grooves and thousands of small slits (sipes) that bite into snow and ice.
In Edmonton, that point often arrives sometime in October. Do not wait for snow on the ground.
Do I need winter tires in Alberta?
There is no province-wide law in Alberta requiring winter tires. Quebec requires them, and British Columbia requires winter-rated tires on many highways in the colder months. In Alberta, it is your choice.
That said, an Edmonton winter includes packed snow, black ice at intersections, and stretches at -30. Winter tires make a real difference to stopping distance and control. Some insurers also offer a discount for winter tires, so ask yours.
All-seasons vs winter tires
- All-season tires marked "M+S" are a compromise designed for mild winters. They harden in deep cold.
- Winter tires carry the three-peak mountain snowflake symbol, which means they passed a standard snow traction test.
- All-weather tires also carry the snowflake symbol and can stay on year-round. They are a middle ground: better than all-seasons in winter, not as strong as a dedicated winter tire on ice.
Check your winter set before the season
Before your swap, pull your winter tires out of storage and check:
- Tread depth. See Tread depth: how much you need for an Edmonton winter.
- Age. Winter rubber hardens with time. See How to read a tire's date code.
- Damage from last season's potholes.
Beat the rush
- Book early. Late September to early October is the sweet spot. Once the first snow is in the forecast, booking calendars across the city fill up fast.
- Buy used tires early too. Marketplace and Kijiji prices on winter sets tend to rise once the snow starts.
- Consider a second set of rims. Tires already on rims make every swap faster and cheaper. See Tire change, seasonal swap or balancing.
And in spring
Swap back once temperatures stay above 7°C, which in Edmonton often means late April or May. Running winter tires all summer wears the soft rubber quickly and costs you a set sooner. Book your spring and fall swaps at our garage in Laurel, South Edmonton.
